Carroll Swenson-Roberts

The first art that drew my attention in art museums was medieval art. The symbolism and straight forward stylized depiction of the world in art of this period has influences how I paint. Most pieces are drawn and painted with pencil, watercolor, gouache, charcoal and pastel on paper and/or wood panels. The narrative begins with the people that inhabit the drawings . Going through pattern books and art history books from different times and cultures and most recently reading the daily newspaper helps me to find images that adds to the meaning, atmosphere, and emotion of my work. The patterns in my work are a way to weave the story together. The process of working on the piece helps the story evolve. The narrative subjects of the work are of small but important moments that make up a life. The story told in the art is the exaltation of the everyday.
